PITTSBURGH (AP) - The board of the Pittsburgh-area transit agency has approved a four-year contract with the agency’s largest labor union.

The Port Authority of Allegheny County said Tuesday that the contract with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 will bolster the agency’s financial stability while preserving transit service levels and jobs.

The union represents 2,200 bus and light-rail drivers and other employees who voted to approve the pact Sunday evening. Union president Steve Palonis said about half of the members cast a vote, and about 83 percent of those who voted were for the contract.

The contract includes an 11.25 percent wage increase for workers- 2.75 percent in the first three years and 3 percent in the fourth year. The same proposal had been rejected by members in September.
