President-elect Donald Trump taunted former President Bill Clinton on Tuesday, chiding his political acumen and attempting to correct the record on who reached out first with a recent phone call.
“Bill Clinton stated that I called him after the election. Wrong, he called me (with a very nice congratulations). He ’doesn’t know much’ …,” Mr. Trump tweeted, “especially how to get people, even with an unlimited budget, out to vote in the vital swing states ( and more). They focused on wrong states.”
The remarks were an apparent response to a recent editorial published by the Record-Review, a local newspaper in New York, in which an unidentified writer relays a story of running into the former president at a local bookstore recently.
In the piece, the writer said Mr. Clinton blamed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s loss to Mr. Trump on FBI Director James B. Comey and said Mr. Trump called him the day after the election.
“Mr. Trump came across as cordial, he said, incredulous, ’like it was 15 years ago’ when the Clintons and Trumps were seen socializing. Mr. Trump threw out what was meant as a compliment about his opponent: ’She was tougher than I thought she’d be,’ ” the piece said.
“’Is Trump smart?’ a man asked as a follow-up,” it continued. “’He doesn’t know much. One thing he does know is how to get angry, white men to vote for him,’ Mr. Clinton replied.”
