MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) - The Jackson County assessor has hired a Jackson County supervisor who lost his re-election bid in last month’s voting.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2hPtWxg ) that Larry Koos was one of more than 30 people who applied for the clerk job. He’ll be paid $38,500 a year and will start work on Jan. 3.

Assessor Lee Karabin says Koos was hired because he already was a county employee and has knowledge of the assessor’s office from his years as a supervisor on the Jackson County Conference Board.

Karabin says Koos will be trained but won’t be a deputy assessor, which requires state testing.
