PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island is asking Providence officials to reject a contract that would provide more than 200 police officers with body cameras.

The ACLU in a letter sent last week urged the city council to hold off on approving the proposal until “strong standards of transparency and accountability” are in place.

Police last week agreed to a yearlong contract with Taser International. Officials say if the council approves the contract this month, the department could have the equipment in January.

ACLU Executive Director Steven Brown says the department’s current policy would allow the public to be kept in the dark if “police misuse of force” were captured.

The Providence Journal reports the council’s press secretary didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
