Disney Studios has officially become the first to cross $7 billion in global ticket sales with its latest hit over the weekend, “Rogue One.”

The newest installment of the iconic “Star Wars” franchise took in $290 million globally over the weekend, which pushed Disney into the record books. The studio was a hit maker all year with products like Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” and “Doctor Strange” and Pixar’s “Finding Dory.”

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn released a statement on Monday thanking the film studios for bringing their “absolute best” to the table.

“These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone. It’s our honor to be able to create these experiences for audiences, and we’re thankful to them for continuing to come out to the theater with us,” Mr. Horn said.

The success of Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One” over the weekend — $155 million domestically — was a fitting bookend for Disney since “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” brought much of its $2.07 billion in ticket sales early in the year. That film, directed by J.J. Abrams, was released in U.S. theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
