TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - President Barack Obama has granted a pardon to a New Jersey man and commuted the sentence of another.
They were among 231 people convicted of federal crimes who got pardons or commutations Monday, the greatest number of individual clemencies in a single day by any president.
Obama pardoned Edward John Hartman of Westampton Township, who was convicted in 1986 of conspiracy for submitting false and fraudulent documents to the Federal Housing Administration and Veterans Affairs. He had received a four-month jail term and three months of probation, and also had to make restitution.
Obama commuted the sentence of Michael Stradford. The Newark man was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison in 2008 for distributing more than five grams of cocaine base.
