GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A longtime civil rights activist and Greenville elected official has died. Lottie Gibson was 86.
The website of the Watkins, Garrett & Woods Mortuary says Gibson died Sunday.
The Greenville News reports (https://grnol.co/2h302IY) that Gibson was a retired educator who served for many years on the Greenville County Council.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson tells the newspaper that Gibson fought for social justice and to end segregation during the Civil Rights era.
County council member Lynn Ballard says that Gibson always looked out for people who were less fortunate.
Gibson was born in Seneca in 1930 and moved to Greenville when she was 6.
Gibson won numerous awards. The substance abuse treatment facility The Phoenix Center named its training center after her earlier this year. She also worked for Greenville Tech for 30 years.
