ABINGDON, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a garbage truck driver has serious but not life-threatening injuries after his truck collided with a freight train at a railroad crossing in southwestern Virginia.

Virginia State Police said in a statement that the crash happened before noon Monday along Wyndale Road at Kenwarn Lane in Abingdon. Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says the train did not derail and that the freight cars were empty.

Police identified the driver of the truck as 24-year-old David S. Anderson of Bristol, Tennessee. State Police say he was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for treatment. The train engineer was not injured.

State Police say charges are pending and the crash is under investigation.
