WASHINGTON (AP) - As expected, the District of Columbia’s presidential electors have cast their ballots for Democrat Hillary Clinton.
The three electors - Democratic councilmembers Jack Evans and Anita Bonds, and D.C. shadow representative Franklin Garcia - voted for Clinton at a brief meeting Monday afternoon.
About six protesters asked the electors during the meeting to abstain, citing concerns about voting irregularities.
District voters have been allowed to cast presidential ballots since 1964, and have always voted overwhelmingly Democratic. Clinton’s win in the District over Republican Donald Trump was the widest margin ever.
Nationally, Trump won the Electoral College vote.
The Electoral College is often an afterthought. But some had held out hope electors would reject Trump because of Clinton’s victory in the national popular vote and Trump critics’ qualms about his qualifications.
