CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A federal judge has approved a $1 million settlement with nearly 200 employees at a popular Charleston seafood restaurant who said the business shorted their tips.

Officials said Hyman’s Seafood violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by taking money from tips for broken dishes and having tips pooled together and shared by workers.

The settlement obtained by The Post and Courier of Charleston (https://bit.ly/2ht8ct0 ) says 179 employees affected by the violations will be given between $100 and $39,000.

The largest amounts will go to two employees who said they were fired in retaliation for reporting the violations.

Attorney Alice Paylor says the restaurant owner didn’t know the details of the law and meant no harm. She says Hyman’s Seafood will continue to operate in downtown Charleston.
