LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Officials at the evangelical Liberty University are planning to open a state-of-the-art shooting range on campus next fall.
University president Jerry Falwell Jr. tells The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/2hCZrgn ) that the new complex will feature pistol, rifle, shotgun and archery facilities built into the mountainside of the campus near Lynchburg.
The university allows students, faculty and staff to carry concealed handguns on campus. Falwell says more than 1,600 people have taken a free course established last year for those interested in earning a Virginia concealed carry permit. He says only 20 students have received the proper documentation from the state police.
WDBJ-TV (https://bit.ly/2gTAig9) reports the Campbell County Board of Supervisors will have a final say on the school’s permit request after a public hearing, which is scheduled for Jan. 3.
