WASHINGTON (AP) - Metro’s board of directors has voted to suspend late-night service on the beleaguered subway system for at least two more years.
The board on Thursday approved schedule changes proposed by general manager Paul Wiedefeld, who argued that shorter operating hours are necessary to keep the system in good repair.
Starting in July 2017, Metro will close at 11:30 p.m. on weeknights and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sundays, it won’t open until 8 a.m.
Metro used to stay open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. It’s been closing at midnight seven days a week since starting a nine-month maintenance blitz in June.
Board members from the District of Columbia wanted to bring back the late-night hours but ultimately went along with Wiedefeld’s proposal.
