TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A labor union with about 70,000 members in New Jersey has backed Phil Murphy for governor in the 2017 Democratic primary.
The Communication Workers of America said Wednesday that Murphy is committed to making New Jersey’s economy work for middle-class families. The CWA represents about 70,000 people in the state, including 40,000 state workers.
Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive, is in strong position in the Democratic primary thanks to a pledge to spend up to $10 million of his own money as well as to the early backing of influential county party officials and labor unions.
Earlier this year Murphy won the backing of the state’s biggest teachers union, the New Jersey Education Association.
He faces several challengers in the June primary, including Assemblyman John Wisniewski.
