Rep. Scott Rigell, a Virginia Republican who is publicly supporting Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson for president, said Tuesday he can’t “in good conscience” support GOP nominee Donald Trump.
“I do so because the nominee for our party, the Republican nominee, I am just convinced is so lacking in judgment and temperament and in character that I think he really represents a true risk to our country,” Mr. Rigell said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “And I cannot, in good conscience, support him.”
Mr. Rigell, who is retiring at the end of his term, said Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is “equally unworthy” of walking into the Oval Office and being called “Madame President.”
“There is pent-up demand for a third alternative, and there is one,” Mr. Rigell said. “The more you know about Governor Johnson — he’s the real deal.”
Mr. Rigell is retiring at the end of his term and so he won’t need Mr. Trump’s supporters to get re-elected this fall. But his stated support for a Libertarian ticket is notable, given the importance the military has on the economy in his southeastern 2nd congressional district.
