ROANOKE, Va. (AP) — Two NAACP leaders were arrested in a sit-in for voter rights at the Virginia office of House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte.

Media outlets report that national NAACP President Cornell William Brooks and youth division director Stephen Green were arrested Monday after protesting with local civil rights activists.

The pair refused to leave until the Republican congressman agreed to move toward restoring federal oversight of states with histories of discriminating against minority voters.

Goodlatte issued a statement saying he believes the Voting Rights Act remains strong.

Police, contacted by Roanoke NAACP President Brenda Hale, sought a resolution. When the building closed, Brooks and Green were arrested and charged with trespassing.
