RICHMOND — Inside linebacker Steven Daniels sustained a torn labrum in one of his shoulders and will miss his rookie season. The Washington Redskins selected the former Boston College standout in the seventh round of the draft.

“It’s extremely frustrating because I’ve never missed a football season before,” Daniels said. “It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to play in the NFL and be on a team at all, and to not get that is definitely discouraging. I’ve just got to stay positive and keep working.”

At Boston College, Daniels played the “mike” linebacker for the Eagles’ defense, which was ranked No. 1. The hard-hitting Daniels was taking third team reps along with Martrell Spaight, Terence Garvin, Carlos Fields and Terence Garvin. Martrell Spaight and rookie Su’a Cravens have received most of the second team reps behind Will Compton, Mason Foster and Perry Riley Jr.

“I’ve never been without a football season and now I don’t have a football season right now,” Daniels said. “I’ve just got to take it day by day and stay learning from the older guys and just take it step by step.”

Running back Matt Jones returned to practice on Friday, but left tackle Trent Williams, tight end Jordan Reed and wide receiver Jamison Crowder were all out. Reed sprained one of his thumbs and coach Jay Gruden said the tight end could have practiced on Friday, but they chose to hold him out. Crowder had what Gruden called a “slight hamstring injury.”

The team has Saturday off so there was an opportunity to get players an additional day of rest on Friday. Williams is out with knee soreness and Gruden said he expects him to be back when the team returns to practice on Sunday.
