Rep. Mike Coffman is telling Coloradans in a new “country first” re-election ad that he is no fan of his party’s presidential pick, vowing to “stand up to” Donald Trump if he wins The White House.
“People ask me, ’What do you think about Trump?’” Mr. Coffman, a Republican seeking a fourth term in Congress, says in the ad. “Honestly, I don’t care for him much and I certainly don’t trust Hillary.”
Mr. Coffman is running against state Senate Minority Leader Morgan Carroll in Colorado’s 6th Congressional District.
He is one of the most vulnerable House Republicans in the 2016 election season and could be the first member of GOP seeking re-election to distance himself form Mr. Trump through paid advertising.
Political handicappers say the race is a “toss-up.”
In the ad, Mr. Coffman says as a former Marine “country comes first” and says his primary mission is to serve the voters of his state - not Mr. Trump.
“So if Donald Trump is president I will stand up to him — plain and simple,” he says. “And if Hillary wins I will hold her accountable every step of the way.”
Mr. Coffman is running the ad in both English and Spanish.
