Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman, a high-profile Republican donor who served as a finance co-chair for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s 2016 presidential campaign, says she’s now supporting Hillary Clinton.
“To vote Republican out of party loyalty alone would be to endorse a candidacy that I believe has exploited anger, grievance, xenophobia and racial division,” Ms. Whitman said in a statement posted to her Facebook page Tuesday evening.
“Donald Trump’s demagoguery has undermined the fabric of our national character,” said Ms. Whitman, who poured more than $100 million of her own money into her unsuccessful run for governor of California in 2010.
“It is clear to me that Secretary Clinton’s temperament, global experience and commitment to America’s bedrock national values make her the far better choice in 2016 for president of the United States,” Ms. Whitman said.
On Tuesday, retiring GOP Rep. Richard Hanna of New York became the first sitting Republican member of Congress to publicly announce he would be supporting Mrs. Clinton.
Mr. Trump also told The Washington Post Tuesday he wasn’t ready to back House Speaker Paul D. Ryan in his primary contest next week or endorse Sen. John McCain, who is in a tough re-election fight this year.
Mr. Trump also said he’s gotten “zero support” in New Hampshire from GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte, who is also in a tough re-election fight.
The GOP presidential nominee said Wednesday there’s “great unity” in his campaign.
“There is great unity in my campaign, perhaps greater than ever before. I want to thank everyone for your tremendous support. Beat Crooked H!” Mr. Trump tweeted.
