The new CEO of the Donald Trump presidential campaign was charged with domestic violence against his then-wife in 1996, Politico reported Thursday night.
Stephen K. Bannon was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence, battery and dissuading a witness, Politico reported, citing police documents from the Santa Monica, Calif., department.
The wife, whom Politico did not name, said in her complaint that Mr. Bannon “pulled at her neck and wrist” and smashed the phone when she tried to call the police. The reporting officer saw marks on the woman, according to the police report.
The woman, however, did not appear in court and Mr. Bannon pleaded not guilty, leading the charges to be dismissed.
The couple were divorced shortly afterward, Politico reported.
Alexandra Preate, a spokeswoman for Mr. Bannon, told Politico that her boss never was interviewed in the incident. She said Mr. Bannon still has “a great relationship with the ex-wife” and supports her and their two children.
