Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by 7 points in Michigan, a state Mr. Trump has said he wants to paint red after it’s gone blue in six straight presidential elections, according to a Suffolk University poll released Thursday.

Mrs. Clinton led Mr. Trump, 44 percent to 37 percent, with Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson at 5 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein at 3 percent, according to the Suffolk University poll of likely voters. Ten percent were undecided.

“Michigan is a state that Barack Obama won by nine points,” said David Paleologos director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston. “Hillary Clinton, with a seven-point lead, appears strongest in the manufacturing base of a state that turned from Republican to Democratic after its auto industry began to decline in the 1980s.”

Mrs. Clinton ran the strongest in the industrial southeast region, while Mr. Trump carried the northern and mid-state areas, according to the polling analysis.

She had the support of 84 percent of Democrats, while Mr. Trump had the support of 70 percent of Republicans. Mr. Trump did lead Mrs. Clinton among independents, 44 percent to 26 percent, with Mr. Johnson at 13 percent and Ms. Stein at 5 percent.

Some national tracking polls have shown Mr. Trump making up some ground on Mrs. Clinton recently, though a national Quinnipiac University survey released Thursday showed her with a 10-point lead over Mr. Trump in a head-to-head matchup.
