Ann Coulter, the author of “In Trump We Trust,” is publicly lambasting Donald Trump’s “softening” on immigration policy.
Ms. Coulter found herself in the odd position Wednesday of trying to promote a book on the Republican Party’s presidential candidate while criticizing his new rhetoric on illegal immigration.
“No citizenship. Let me go a step further — they’ll pay back-taxes, they have to pay taxes, there’s no amnesty, as such, there’s no amnesty, but we work with them,” Mr. Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Wednesday. “Now, everybody agrees we get the bad ones out. But when I go through and I meet thousands and thousands of people on this subject — and I’ve had very strong people come up to me, really great, great people come up to me — and they’ve said, ’Mr. Trump, I love you, but to take a person who’s been here for 15 or 20 years and throw them and their family out, it’s so tough, Mr. Trump,’ I have it all the time. It’s a very, very hard thing.”
The billionaire said he is open to “softening” his stance because he isn’t “looking to hurt people.”
Ms. Coulter then unleashed on the candidate on Twitter. Some posts include:
- “Only part he left out was the ’hoops’ they’ll have to jump through! Trump:’No citizenship. Let me go a step further — they’ll pay back-taxes’”
- “Trump: ’they have to pay taxes, there’s no amnesty’ [Pro Tip: ’Back taxes’ means we pay illegals $30k apiece in EITC.]”
- “It’s not ’amnesty.’ It’s ’comprehensive immigration reform’!!!! Trump: ’they have to pay taxes, there’s no amnesty.’”
“In Trump We Trust” states that there is only one thing Mr. Trump can do that cannot be “forgiven” — change his stance on immigration, Buzzfeed noted Friday.
“I guessed yesterday that Coulter would be the only big-name Trumper with the stones to come after him for flipping on amnesty and, so far, that’s correct,” responded Allahpundit of the conservative website Hot Air on Friday. “The sellout is coming, in other words, and Coulter knows this topic well enough to recognize the buzzwords instantly.”
Donald Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson told CNN on Thursday that the candidate’s position has not changed. Instead, she asserted that he is “using different words” to articulate the same policy.
