D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has named Assistant Chief Peter Newsham to head up the city’s police department on an interim basis.
Chief Newsham will take over for current Chief Cathy Lanier who is leaving Sept. 17 to take a job running security for the NFL.
For 14 years, Chief Newsham has served as assistant chief and currently heads the Investigative Services Bureau, which is responsible for investigating violent, property, sexual assault and narcotic crimes.
In a statement Tuesday, Ms. Bowser said a search for internal and external candidates to fill the position permanently has already begun, and a job announcement will be published in the coming days.
