SEOUL, South Korea — The South Korean military says North Korea has test-fired a missile from a submarine off its east coast.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the North had fired the submarine-launched ballistic missile on Wednesday morning.

The statement didn’t say whether the launch was successful or not.

The launch came two days after South Korean and U.S. troops began their annual summer drills that the North calls an invasion rehearsal.

North Korea usually responds to the regular South Korea-U.S. military drills with weapons tests and fiery warlike rhetoric.
