Two men were fatally shot in Newark, New Jersey, during the city’s annual “24 Hours of Peace” celebration designed to promote non-violence.
A third man was fatally shot and a triple shooting left one victim in serious condition within hours after the conclusion of the celebration downtown that featured national hip hop acts such as Fat Joe and Big Daddy Kane, NJ.com reported.
The annual celebration started five years ago in an effort to bring awareness to urban violence. Last year, two men were shot to death during the 24-hour event.
This year, the event kicked off at 6 p.m. Friday and concluded 6 p.m. Saturday.
Kevin Baker, 29, was shot dead on Schuyler Avenue at 10:45 p.m. Friday, and Robert Harrison Jr., 24, was shot dead on Willoughby Street shortly before midnight Friday, NJ.com reported.
A triple shooting about 6:20 p.m. Saturday left three men injured. One man was in serious condition and two others were listed in stable condition after the shooting near Chancellor and Maple avenues, NJ.com reported.
Akbar J. Scott, 42, was fatally shot about 9:45 p.m. Saturday near Newark’s Upper Clinton Hill neighborhood, police said.
Authorities said the shootings appeared to be unrelated and were currently being investigated.
