ASHBURN, Virginia — Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s vow Tuesday get tough on trade with China won over some Chinese-Americans at a rally here Tuesday.
“Everything he says is correct. You have to do the fair thing for trade. You have to be smarter,” said Samuel Yang, an IT professional who said he escaped China and is now a U.S. citizen.
Mr. Yang and fellow Chinese-American Karl Zhang held a T-shirt that said “Chinese Americans [love] Trump.”
Mr. Trump has made trade policy with China a top issue of his campaign, promising to decrease the massive U.S. trade deficit with China and challenge the communist country’s manipulation of its currency, which harms American businesses and other trading partners.
“We are like the whipping post,” Mr. Trump said of U.S. dealings with China, including the trade imbalance and China flexing its military muscle unchecked.
Mr. Yang and Mr. Zhang said they also responded to Mr. Trump’s opposition to what they described as socialist-style policies of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“We came from a communist country. We know how it is,” Mr. Yang said.
“That’s why we left China,” chimed in Mr. Zhang, a professor of Chinese literature.
