A woman who identified herself as an Air Force mother was booed by a Nevada crowd after asking GOP vice presidential nominee Mike Pence a question tied to what she called Donald Trump’s “disrespect” for the Khan family.
“Time and time again, Trump has disrespected our nation’s armed forces and veterans, and his disrespect for Mr. Khan and his family is just an example of that,” the woman said, prompting boos from the crowd at the event Monday.
“Will there ever be a point in time where you’re able to look at Trump in the eye and tell him enough is enough?” she asked Mr. Pence, trying to continue over the booing. “You have a son in the military — how do you tolerate his disrespect?”
The crowd had applauded after the woman said her son is currently serving in the Air Force.
“Folks, that’s what freedom looks like and that’s what freedom sounds like, OK?” Mr. Pence told the crowd.
Mr. Trump has been engaged in a back-and-forth with Khizr Khan and his wife, Ghazala, who are the parents of Capt. Humayun Khan, a Muslim-American who was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq.
During an appearance at the Democratic National Convention last week, Mr. Khan had asked Mr. Trump if he had read the Constitution. Mr. Trump has hit back at the Khans since then, while clarifying that he thinks Capt. Khan was a “hero.”
Mr. Pence told the woman he honors her son’s service and her family’s service to the country, and called Capt. Khan “an American hero.”
“We cherish his family. We cherish all of our Gold Star families in this country — we truly do,” Mr. Pence said.
He also said that having spent time with Mr. Trump, he’s never been around someone more devoted to the armed forces and their families, as well as the country’s veterans.
“Donald Trump supports our soldiers and supports our veterans like no other leader in my lifetime,” Mr. Pence said.
