Donald Trump says it would be “fine” to try American terror suspects in military tribunals at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
“I would say they could be tried there, that would be fine,” the Republican presidential nominee told The Miami Herald ahead of his speech to home builders Thursday in Miami Beach.
Mr. Trump criticized the Obama administration for transferring Guantanamo prisoners out of the facility in an effort to shut it down. There are 76 detainees left at the facility, with 34 of those cleared for transfer.
“I want to make sure that if we have radical Islamic terrorists, we have a very safe place to keep them,” Mr. Trump said.
The president, he added, is “allowing people to get out that are terrible people.”
Federal law does not allow U.S. citizens to be tried at military commissions. Changing the law would require an act of Congress, The Herald noted.
