Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is set to give the keynote speech at the annual conference of the Log Cabin Republicans, a conservative LGBT group, the Washington Examiner reported Thursday.
“I am going to focus on national security and issues that bring us together,” Mr. Gingrich told the news outlet.
Log Cabin Republicans President Gregory T. Angelo said Mr. Gingrich jumped at the opportunity to speak at the Sept. 28 conference. Mr. Angelo expects about 400 people to attend, the Examiner reported.
Mr. Gingrich had joined other top Republicans, including nominee Donald Trump, in reaching out to the LGBT community during the party’s convention in Cleveland.
“If our enemies had their way, gays, lesbians and transgender citizens would be put to death as they are today in the Islamic State and Iran,” the former presidential candidate said at the time. “If our enemies had their way, every person on earth would be subject to conversion by the sword and to a cruel and violent system of laws.”
Mr. Gingrich’s comments came just a few days after the Log Cabin Republicans denounced the party’s staunchly socially conservative 2016 platform, calling it “the most anti-LGBT platform” in the GOP’s 162-year history.

“This isn’t my GOP,” Mr. Angelo said at the time.
