The Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers will meet in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008 after the Flyers snagged the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
The Capitals, who visited the St. Louis Blues in their penultimate regular-season game on Saturday night, will open the series at home late next week. They will have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs after claiming the Presidents’ Trophy, which is given to the team with the best record over the course of the season.
Philadelphia, which will conclude its season by visiting the New York Islanders on Sunday night, has won 14 of its last 22 games. The Capitals and Flyers split their four-game season series, with the Flyers winning one of those two games in overtime and the other in a shootout.
The two teams last met in the playoffs in 2008, when the Flyers, then the No. 6 seed, defeated the third-seeded Capitals in seven games. Mike Richards, now playing for the Capitals, had two goals and five assists for Philadelphia in that series.
Exact dates, times and broadcast listings for the games have yet to be determined.
