Late-night talk-show host Bill Maher ended his show Friday by urging Republicans to re-strategize the 2016 presidential campaign and instead focus on fixing the party in time for the next election.

“It’s like one of those houses where an old lady lived with 100 cats who peed everywhere. That is your party today — a filthy, pee-stained house full of dead cats,” Mr. Maher said during his show “Real Time,” Mediaite reported

“Do you really want to live there for the next four years? Do you really want to spend four years defending every single thing that President Trump tweets in the middle of the night?” he said.

He mocked the two leading GOP candidates, businessman Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, saying Republicans were dealing with an unpalatable choice on either side.

“Either Ted Cruz — a man with all the appeal of Jared from Subway, minus the inspiring weight-loss story — or Donald Trump, the zombie candidate,” he said.

Mr. Maher argued that the GOP should just “punt” this year and play defense against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Congress.

“You’ve got a great defense,” he said. “By that, I mean you’re great at being obstructionist [expletive] when you’re out of office.”

He argued that opposing Mrs. Clinton for the next four years would be more fun that dealing with Mr. Trump.

“Remember, you can’t impeach her, unless you elect her,” Mr. Maher said.
