Militants from the Islamic State terrorist group have reportedly abducted 300 cement workers near the city of Damascus in Syria, according to Syrian state TV.

State TV reported that the workers were abducted from the al-Badia Cement Co. on Thursday in Dumeir, according to CBS News.

The abductions come after militants launched a surprise attack against government forces in Dumeir earlier this week.

A source within the cement company told the state-run SANA news agency that they had not been successful in establishing contact with any of the abducted workers.

The Islamic State group is known to kidnap civilians and ransom them back to their families or employers as a source of income.
