A senior adviser to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign said Wednesday it’s worth investigating whether Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas is illegally coordinating with pro-Cruz super PACS, after the Trump campaign had leveled that accusation directly on Tuesday night.
“I think it’s something that we need to look at,” Trump campaign adviser Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday on CNN’s “New Day.” “I don’t know, specifically, whether or not he is directly engaged, but I do think it’s something that is worth taking a look at, and something we need to spend some time investigating.”
In a statement Tuesday night after Mr. Cruz had clinched a win in Wisconsin, the Trump campaign had said of Mr. Cruz: “Not only was he propelled by the anti-Trump Super PAC’s spending countless millions of dollars on false advertising against Mr. Trump, but he was coordinating with his own Super PAC’s (which is illegal) who totally control him.”
“Ted Cruz is worse than a puppet — he is a Trojan horse, being used by the party bosses attempting to steal the nomination from Mr. Trump,” the campaign said.
Asked if she felt the campaign went too far in putting out a statement accusing Mr. Cruz of a federal crime without clear evidence, Ms. Huckabee Sanders said she wasn’t with the campaign Tuesday night.
“They may have something I haven’t seen, but again, I think that there is definitely a pattern here of behavior that should be looked at and should be something we’re focused on,” she said.
