Voter turnout for Maryland’s primary elections has been steady with few problems at polling places in the eastern part of Montgomery County.

So far, the switch to paper ballots hasn’t caused any trouble, according to election judges at several polling places in Takoma Park.

“The paper ballots are a huge improvement,” said Mike McMahon, chief election judge at Takoma Park Elementary School, where 479 people voted as of 11 a.m. “There’s so much less frustration.”

Dianne Cherry, chief election judge at Takoma Park Middle School, also said its been a calm day, with a steady stream of 392 voters as of 11 a.m. and few concerns from voters.

State Sen. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat who is running for the 8th Congressional District, has had a heavy presence in Takoma Park — where he resides — and Silver Spring.

Takoma Park resident Susan Alexander said she voted for Mr. Raskin because he’s smart, thoughtful and experienced.

“He really knows the process. He knows how to get things done,” said Ms. Alexander, 58.
