The Ted Cruz campaign on Friday released a new video advertisement hitting primary rival Donald Trump on his short-lived support of transgender bathroom access.
The ad suggests Mr. Trump is in league with the “PC police” responsible for the firing of ESPN baseball analyst Curt Schilling, who lost his job after he came out against opposite-sex use of public facilities.
“Curt Schilling was fired by the PC police for suggesting that grown men shouldn’t use the bathroom with little girls,” the ad begins. “Guess who’s joined the ranks of the PC police?”
The 20-second spot features audio of Mr. Trump from Thursday denouncing a North Carolina law prohibiting people from using the facilities of the opposite sex. The businessman’s words are played over a graphic of side-by-side bathroom stalls, one with a little girl’s shoes visible beneath the door, and the other with those of a grown man.
“People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate,” Mr. Trump says in the ad.
“Donald Trump can’t be trusted with common sense. Why would we trust him with the White House?” the ad concludes.
The video echoes earlier comments from Mr. Cruz, who said Mr. Trump had taken the side of political correctness over common sense.
Less than 24 hours after making the initial comments, Mr. Trump backtracked on the issue, suggesting transgender bathroom access is a matter best left to the states.
