A senior adviser to Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s campaign cautioned Wednesday against thinking Mr. Trump’s “Lyin’ Ted” nickname for Sen. Ted Cruz is gone for good.
“I wouldn’t be too sure to erase that,” Trump campaign senior adviser Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on CNN’s “New Day” when asked if she thinks “we’ve heard the last of Lyin’ Ted.”
“My guess is it’ll still pop up from time to time,” she said. “And I think a lot of that will depend on how Ted Cruz reacts over the next few days and what his campaign does over the next few days and in the next couple of contests, how you may see Donald Trump react to that.”
“I think what we’re seeing is him become a general election candidate and setting his sights on Hillary and certainly making that his new focus,” Ms. Huckabee Sanders said.
Mr. Trump has frequently referred to Mr. Cruz, his top 2016 GOP rival, as “Lyin’ Ted” on the campaign trail. But in a measured, relatively short victory speech Tuesday evening in New York, Mr. Trump called him “Senator Cruz.”
“Senator Cruz is just about mathematically eliminated,” Mr. Trump said. “As you know, we have won millions of more votes than Senator Cruz — millions and millions of more votes than Governor [John] Kasich.”
