Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernard Sanders are locked in a tight race in New York, with the contest too close to call after polls closed at 9 p.m.
Exit polling showed the race to be much closer than anticipated. CNN exit polling, for example, gave Mrs. Clinton 52 percent of the vote to 48 percent for Mr. Sanders.
Ahead of the primary, surveys had shown Mrs. Clinton with a double-digit lead.
The Sanders campaign spent the past several days downplaying the New York result, lowering expectations and setting up a scenario where Mrs. Clinton would have to win by a significant margin or the result would be a disappointment for her.
Still, the New York result won’t have a major impact on the delegate race, and Mrs. Clinton will remain far ahead regardless of the outcome in the Empire State.
