Donald Trump’s campaign manager said Sunday that it is “a little unrealistic” that he would apologize to a former Breitbart reporter who accused him of battery after an encounter last month in Florida.
“I’d be happy to have a conversation with her, but to apologize to someone I’ve never spoken to and candidly don’t ever remember having any interaction with, I think, is something that is a little unrealistic now,” Corey Lewandowski said on “Fox News Sunday.” “But I have said and would be happy to say again — this is a person I’ve never spoken to — but I’d be happy to have that conversation if we can put this thing behind us.”
Mr. Lewandowski said he tried to reach out to reporter Michelle Fields after the incident, but Ms. Fields has said she has no record of Mr. Lewandowski trying to call her.
“I turned over my phone records to the Palm Beach County district attorney’s office,” he said. “It clearly shows I called her phone number that evening when I got back and read about this on the Twitter feed.”
Security footage shows Mr. Lewandowski grabbing Ms. Fields’ arm during a press scrum after a March 8 press conference in Jupiter, Florida.
Last week, Palm Beach County’s district attorney declined to bring charges against Mr. Lewandowski, citing a lack of evidence.
“I’m happy this is behind us,” Mr. Lewandowski said Sunday.
Ms. Fields said she is considering filing a civil suit against Mr. Lewandowski and Mr. Trump for defamation.
