Donald Trump’s top campaign surrogate Michael Cohen admitted Thursday that he cannot vote for Mr. Trump in the New York primary next week because he is a registered Democrat.
Mr. Cohen, who currently serves as special counsel to Mr. Trump and is the executive vice-president of the Trump Organization, made the stunning revelation in an interview with CNN about the Republican National Committee’s rules for the nomination process.
CNN’s John Berman asked Mr. Cohen whether he though RNC Chairman Reince Priebus should stay or go if Mr. Trump wins the nomination.
“I’m actually a registered Democrat so I don’t really care about Reince Priebus,” Mr. Cohen said.
“Wait! You can’t vote?” a shocked Mr. Berman asked.
“You’re not voting for Donald Trump?!” co-host Kate Bolduan exclaimed.
“Not in the primary,” Mr. Cohen said coolly.
“Man, he’s losing votes from his family and the people who work for him,” Mr. Berman said.
Earlier this week, Mr. Trump’s children Ivanka and Erick revealed they can’t vote for their father in the primary either because they did not register as Republican early enough.
Mr. Cohen brushed off the exchange saying, “You don’t have to worry about Mr. Trump. He’s polling at 50 plus percent. This is his hometown.”
