OPINION:
The Democratic presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont, met for their ninth debate in New York City, ahead of the all important New York primary on Thursday. This is the Washington Times’ take on who won and who lost.
Winner:
Hillary Clinton: Although she’d much rather speak about gun control and her readiness for the White House than her paid speeches and transcripts, Mrs. Clinton withheld Mr. Sanders’ fury, unleashed harsh criticisms of her own, and didn’t make any mistakes. Considering she’s leading the popular vote by more than 2 million ballots cast, and has a massive super-delegate lead, that’s all she needed to do.
Loser:
Bernie Sanders: Dripping with sarcasm, Mr. Sanders came out swinging, but to no avail. He needed to reach beyond his faithful base and convince voters on the fence that he is capable and prepared for the White House. When questioned about how he’d break up the big banks — one of his signature issues and a topic he fumbled in a recent New York Daily News interview — Mr. Sanders still didn’t have a clear, concise answer. When asked to name an instance when Mrs. Clinton was influenced by Wall Street donations, he also was flat — declining to offer a compelling or specific response. Mr. Sanders needed a big night in order to play catch up, and he didn’t have one.
