Donald Trump thinks the Republican — and, for that matter, the Democratic — presidential-nominating process is corrupt because, in his opinion, the candidate with the most delegates from a party’s primaries should automatically be that party’s nominee. That’s not how it works, Donald.

If a candidate has more than 50 percent of the delegates coming into the convention, he or she would be the nominee. Otherwise the candidate must get additional delegates at the convention in order to get more than 50 percent. And remember — 60 percent to 70 percent of primary voters so far have not voted for Mr. Trump.

The delegates to the convention are committed, grassroots party members who pay their own way to be at the convention. They are committed to nominating the candidate they believe will win in the general election. And it may not be Mr. Trump.

I find it incredible that someone would seek a party’s nomination and not know how the process works. It’s like bringing a football team to play a game and not understanding what offsides is and then complaining if you lose.
