Scott Shafer, the former Syracuse coach who was named Maryland’s defensive coordinator by new coach DJ Durkin in December, has resigned from his position, citing personal reasons.

The university made the announcement via a press release on Friday afternoon. It gave no other details about Shafer’s decision or who would replace him in that role.

“I want to thank DJ Durkin for the opportunity to be on his staff, but at this time I feel it’s best to step aside to tend to personal matters,” Shafer said in the press release. “I’m sincerely appreciative of his support and friendship.”

Shafer, who spent parts of three seasons as Syracuse’s coach, was fired in late November. He was one of the first coaches hired by Durkin and agreed to a reported three-year contract worth $2.25 million with the possibility of additional bonuses.

Maryland opened spring practice on March 7 and is scheduled to hold its annual spring game on April 16.
