NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City Council is honoring nearly 100 Holocaust survivors and showcasing a Torah that was lost for more than 70 years.
An organization known as “From the Depths” is repairing the Torah scroll, which was found last year in a small home in Poland.
It had been stashed there in 1939 by a rabbi who later died in a Nazi concentration camp.
It was displayed Wednesday in the city council’s chambers.
Rabbi Arthur Schneier, a Holocaust survivor, delivered a speech to thank the council for creating a $1.5 million fund to aid Holocaust survivors living in poverty.
Officials estimate that about half of the approximately 60,000 Holocaust survivors who reside in New York City live below the poverty line.
