Once the Washington Redskins named quarterback Kirk Cousins the starter on Monday, it was uncertain where Robert Griffin III would factor on the depth chart as he recovered from a concussion sustained in the second preseason game.
According to a report from NFL Network, Griffin will remain on the 53-man roster as the second-string quarterback once he clears concussion protocol.
Coach Jay Gruden said after Thursday night’s final preseason game that Griffin could be cleared Friday. Yet with Griffin’s health status still uncertain, Colt McCoy could serve as the second-string quarterback Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins.
After Griffin sustained a concussion in the second preseason game against the Lions, he was initially cleared for the third preseason game against the Ravens as announced by the team. Just 24 hours later, independent neurologist Robert Kurtzke decided Griffin was not yet healthy enough to play against Baltimore.
If Griffin gets hurt severely enough in a practice or game this season where he can’t pass his exit physical, the Redskins would have to pay him over $16 million in 2016.
