Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has been taking heat from many of his 2016 GOP rivals, with retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson one of the exceptions.

Mr. Trump said Friday he hopes Mr. Carson, who has been running second behind Mr. Trump in recent polling, will come after him so he can start counter-punching.

“I’m much better as a counter-puncher, so I’d rather have and I’m hoping for Ben to really hit me at some point because I love to counter-punch,” Mr. Trump said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Mr. Trump said Mr. Carson has been “very nice to me” and that “he’s actually a really nice guy.”

“I like him — we get along very well, as I do with most of the other people up on stage, and it’s interesting,” he said. “But I think I’m probably going to wait. I do have certain things to say, but I’m not going to be saying them for a little while — let’s see what happens.”

Mr. Trump might have given a partial glimpse in an interview published by The Daily Caller this week.

“I think it’s a very difficult situation that he’d be placed in,” Mr. Trump said. “He’s really a friend of mine, I just think it’s a very difficult situation that he puts himself into, to have a doctor who wasn’t creating jobs and would have a nurse or maybe two nurses. It’s such a different world. I’ve created tens of thousands of jobs over the years.”
