GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump said Thursday that so far, everybody who has attacked him “has gone down the tubes” and that former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, one of his 2016 Republican rivals, was “getting out of the race.”
Not so fast, Mr. Perry said soon after Mr. Trump’s press conference in New York City, where the billionaire businessman pledged to support the eventual Republican nominee.
“You know, a broken clock is right once a day,” Mr. Perry said on Fox News when asked if Mr. Trump was correct that he is getting out of the race. “The bottom line is I’m still here and I’m still workin’ and we need to be talkin’ about solutions and not just rhetoric out there.”
Mr. Perry, who attacked Mr. Trump’s candidacy as a “cancer” on conservatism in July, has struggled to gain traction in the polls and has had several staff shakeups in recent weeks in early-voting states.
“I think it’s a long time until this election’s over,” Mr. Perry said, pointing out that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was leading in early polling on the 2008 GOP presidential nominating contest.
Asked if he currently has employees in New Hampshire and Iowa, Mr. Perry said that “we have people that are volunteering for us in those states.”
“The fact is I’m really appreciative and we’ve got young men and women that believe in what we’re doin’ and … I don’t have a billion dollars to hire staff like Mr. Trump does, but we’ve got some great volunteers in those states and I’m proud of it - I’m glad they’re workin’ with us,” he said.
