Shawn Lauvao, who sustained a lateral sprain of his left ankle five plays into the Washington Redskins’ 32-21 loss at the New York Giants on Thursday, has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season.

The Redskins’ starting left guard, Lauvao sustained the injury while trying to block Giants defensive end Kerry Wynn on a play that began with 9:03 remaining in the first quarter. Coach Jay Gruden said on Friday that Lauvao has “a chance to miss a little bit of time,” and Lauvao did not attend practice on Monday.

With Lauvao out, the Redskins will look to Josh LeRibeus, Spencer Long or rookie Arie Kouandjio to fill in as the starting left guard. LeRibeus also left the game against the Giants with an injury, succumbing to a strained left calf, but did not expect it to be serious; Long was originally ticketed as the starting right guard at the beginning of training camp, and Kouandjio was a fourth-round draft pick out of Alabama.

Washington also placed cornerback Justin Rogers, who has been battling plantar fasciitis, on injured reserve on Tuesday. Rogers filled in for the suspended Bashaud Breeland as the nickel cornerback in the season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins, but did not play in either of the last two games because of the injury.

Quinton Dunbar, who signed with the Redskins as an undrafted wide receiver before moving to cornerback in training camp, was signed off the practice squad, and the team added inside linebacker Mason Foster, who spent four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being cut by the Chicago Bears at the end of training camp.

Austin Reiter, a seventh-round draft pick out of USF who was cut by the Redskins when the preseason ended, was signed to the practice squad.
