As Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump was insulting him at the GOP debate earlier this month, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky said he was wondering how anyone in the Republican party could think such a “clown” would be fit to be president.
Asked Monday on CNN’s “New Day” what he was thinking as Mr. Trump was going after him, Mr. Paul said, “I’m thinking, how did we get the race for the most important office in the free world to sink to such depths, and how could anyone in my party think that this clown is fit to be president?”
“So I think really, ultimately, we’re going to get to the truth; ultimately, we’re going to get to substance,” Mr. Paul said. “It just takes a while.”
During the debate, Mr. Trump had said Mr. Paul shouldn’t even be on the stage because of his standing in the polls.
“I never attacked him on his look and believe me, there’s plenty of subject matter right there,” Mr. Trump also said.
Mr. Paul, who has been in the low single digits in recent polling on the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, predicted Monday that he’d be around in the presidential contest “just as long as” Mr. Trump, “or longer.”
