Conservative radio host Glenn Beck lamented Friday a missed opportunity by Pope Francis, saying the pontiff “could have ended abortion in America” if he really wanted to during his visit to the U.S. this week.
The leader of the Catholic church did hint at his views on abortion during his address to CongressThursday when he spoke of the sanctity of life at “every age.”
But for Mr. Beck, that remark alone was not enough.
“The pope could have ended abortion in America yesterday,” Mr. Beck said on his show “The Glenn Beck Program” Friday night, Mediaite reported. “He could have stood in the well of the Senate and said, ’I’m sorry. I know this is not my place. I’m not here to talk to you about politics. I’m here to talk to you about life, and you have the opportunity right now to end abortion.’”
Mr. Beck pointed out that Mother Teresa did take that opportunity when she spoke at a prayer breakfast and directly addressed then-President Bill Clinton on the issue, saying “I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion.”
“Yesterday the pope should have gotten up, as the vicar of Christ, and said ’Christ demands that we take care of the most innocent among us, the most helpless among us,” Mr. Beck said.
“This isn’t asking him to do something that is not in his trait, is not in his purview. This is not asking him to do anything political. This is asking him to be the vicar of Christ. That’s what he was introduced as. That’s his title. Missed opportunity,” Mr. Beck added.
