The U.S. Catholic bishops directly reminded America’s top diplomat Wednesday on social media that church teaching on immigration and the environment come part-and-parcel with its condemnation of abortion.
At about 12:45 p.m., the certified Twitter account of Secretary of State John F. Kerry thanked Pope Francis for agreeing with the Obama administration’s stance on a variety of issues.
“Pleased and moved by @Pontifex’s call to resolve disputes through diplomacy, address #climatechange and protect the vulnerable in our world,” Mr. Kerry wrote.
Less than an hour later came a reminder from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, before whom before Francis had just finished speaking, that much else of what the church teaches is antithetical to the contemporary Democratic Party.
“Agree, John. @Pontifex reassures all of us that Catholic teachings have always treasured human life from its very beginning,” the bishops’ account posted.
