Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Thursday he’s not opposed to apologizing but that there’s nothing to apologize for with respect to comments he’s made suggesting former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush’s Mexican-born wife, Columba, influences Mr. Bush’s views on immigration.
“I actually said she’s a very nice woman and a very wonderful woman and I said that — I thought that would be helpful to say — but I didn’t want to apologize because I really did nothing wrong,” Mr. Trump said via phone on “Fox and Friends.” “You know, this had to do with illegal immigration, and I did nothing wrong.”
At Wednesday’s debate, Mr. Bush was asked about Mr. Trump’s hinting that his views on immigration are influenced by his wife, Columba, who is a U.S. citizen born in Mexico. Mr. Trump said in a CNN interview earlier in the summer that if his wife were from Mexico, he thinks he would have a “soft spot” for people from Mexico.
“I believe strongly in apology, apologizing. I don’t mind apologizing … but, you know, if you do something wrong, you apologize,” Mr. Trump said. “It really was proven that I did nothing wrong here. So it was a little bit tough, It might have been easier, ’Oh, I apologize,’ but … that would have been the headline if I did that. That would have been a big headline. Even [on] your show, that would have been the big headline.”
